STCW Elementary First Aid

To give the participants basic knowledge and skills qualifying them for:

  • Lifesaving first aid
  • Ordinary first aid in emergency situations
  • Evacuation situations onboard ships


Upon completion of the course, participants will have obtained basic knowledge plus skills on:

  • The four main points of first aid onboard a ship
  • The human needs for oxygen
  • A-B-C principles
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and practice exercise
  • Drowning
  • Recovery position
  • Hypothermia and treatment
  • Bleeding and shock
  • Burns and electric burns
  • Fractures of bones
  • Head and spine injuries
  • Stretchers, transport and evacuations
  • To use the four main points of first aid onboard a ship
  • Understand the theory about lifesaving first aid
  • In practices give cardiopulmonary resuscitation and use recovery position
  • Understand the symptoms of bleeding and shock
  • Use of different dressing and bandage
  • Understand the theory about hypothermia and demonstrates the treatment
  • Understand the theory about burns, fractures, head and spine injuries and demonstrate the treatment in practice
  • Recognize the hazard of transporting a patient with injury of pelvis or spine as well as demonstrate the correct procedures for evacuating of such casualties
