A well trained crew is key to maintain a high level of security in vessel operations. Thus the ISPS code require that all crew employed or engaged onboard any vessel required to comply with the code shall have an essential ship security awareness.

This course have been designed to provide crew members with no designated security duties the required knowledge, understanding and proficiency to comply with the requirements as set out in the ISPS code and STCW section A-VI/6-1.

  • Introduction to the ISPS Code and Maritime Security
  • Maritime security terms and definitions
  • Maritime Security (MARSEC) levels and their related security measures and procedures
  • How to recognize security treats, including piracy and armed robbery
  • How to recognize weapons, dangerous substances and devices
  • Reporting of security breaches, events and incidents
  • Security plans, policies and procedures, including contingency plans and drills
  • Roles and responsibilities, including requirements for the vessel and company
  • Sensitive Security-Related Information (SSRI) and communications

The course is written with reference to the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, the STCW Convention Table A-VI/6-1, the IMO Model Course 3.27 and the MNTB Security Courses Criteria

Upon completion the course you will have sufficient knowledge, understanding and skills, enable you to deal with security related issues onboard vessels, which are not designated security duties, including, but not limited to:

  • Contribute to the enhancement of maritime security through heightened awareness
  • Recognize security threats
  • Understand the need for and methods of maintaining security awareness and vigilance

    The course is concluded with an unsupervised multiple choice exam.A minimum score of 80% is required to pass
