Introduction to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Tanker Cargo and Ballast Handling Simulator Refresher (LCHS)

The LPG Tanker Cargo and Ballast Handling Simulator Refresher course is designed to help officers involved in LPG cargo operations maintain and refresh their competence in routine and emergency LPG tanker procedures. The course uses realistic simulator-based exercises to reinforce safe cargo handling, ballast operations, troubleshooting, emergency response, and operational decision-making. The course is guided by IMO Model Course 1.35 and supports continued alignment with current industry safety standards and best practice.

Essential information

Prerequisites

Participants should be operational or management level deck officers, including Gas Engineers, who have previously completed a full LPG cargo handling simulator course or equivalent 5-day LPG vessel training.

Who is it for?

This course is intended for deck officers, Gas Engineers, and other officers responsible for LPG tanker cargo operations who need to refresh, maintain, or demonstrate continued competence in routine and emergency LPG cargo and ballast handling.

Assessment

Participants are assessed through practical simulator exercises.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a Maersk Training Certificate.

Course content

LO2

Operate and monitor LPG cargo handling equipment, including pumps, compressors, reliquefaction plant, and associated systems.

LO3

Perform routine LPG cargo and ballast operations safely, including loading, unloading, ballast passage operations, and cargo system monitoring.

LO4

Apply safe procedures for special LPG operations, including gassing up, cooling down, warming up, venting, purging, and liquid freeing.

LO5

Respond effectively to simulated emergency situations, system faults, and abnormal operating conditions using appropriate remedial actions.

LO6

Demonstrate safe operational decision-making, communication, teamwork, and compliance with LPG tanker procedures during simulator exercises.

LPG Vessel and Cargo System Refresher

Review of LPG vessel types, tank configurations, cargo system layout, instrumentation, auxiliary systems, and key operational limitations.

Cargo Handling Equipment

Refresher on the operation and monitoring of pumps, compressors, reliquefaction plant, and associated cargo handling equipment.

Routine Cargo and Ballast Operations

Simulator-based review of loading, unloading, ballast passage operations, cargo monitoring, and safe operational control.

Special LPG Operations

Refresher on gassing up, cooling down, warming up, venting, purging, and liquid freeing operations.

Emergency Operations and System Faults

Simulator-based practice in responding to emergency situations, system faults, abnormal operating conditions, and required remedial actions.

Safe Operating Practice and Decision-Making

Application of current safety standards, procedures, communication, teamwork, and operational decision-making during routine and emergency LPG scenarios.
