Modern ships are increasingly dependent on digital systems for navigation, propulsion, cargo handling, safety, and ship–shore coordination. As this dependency grows, cyber risks no longer remain confined to IT systems alone—they directly affect navigational safety, operational integrity, and commercial performance. Cyber incidents at sea can manifest as distorted position, time, or sensor data, creating real and immediate physical risk to vessels, crews, and the environment.
This course is designed to provide maritime professionals with a foundational understanding of maritime cyber security from an operational and safety perspective, aligned with current international regulatory requirements. It connects cyber risk directly to ship operations, navigation, and decision-making on the bridge, rather than treating cyber security as a purely technical or compliance exercise.
Participants will gain insight into the regulatory framework governing maritime cyber risk management, the structure of ship–shore digital dependencies, and the expanding cyber threat surface onboard modern vessels. Particular emphasis is placed on how cyber degradation—intentional or accidental—can compromise navigation systems, GNSS integrity, collision avoidance, and bridge team performance.
Through practical examples, operational principles, and scenario-based exercises, the course develops cyber-resilient navigation and bridge operations, enabling crews and shore staff to recognise degraded or manipulated data, apply structured cross-verification, and safely transition to manual and fallback procedures. The ultimate purpose of this course is to strengthen operational resilience, improve decision-making under cyber stress, and ensure that cyber risk is effectively managed as a core component of the Safety Management System.
