Introduction
Wind Turbine Safety Rules (WTSR) training makes sure everyone working on or around wind turbines understands and applies the safety procedures needed to prevent accidents and injuries. The course covers the main hazards, including working at height, electrical risks, confined spaces and emergency situations, and reinforces safe behaviours and compliance with industry standards. It helps people recognise risks, make informed decisions and carry out their work safely in the demanding environment of wind energy operations.
Who is it for
The WTSR course is aimed primarily at wind turbine technicians, contractors, operational controllers, authorising engineers and safety managers who are directly involved in the maintenance, operation and safety management of wind turbines.
Prerequisite
There are no formal prerequisites for the WTSR course. Participants are expected to have a basic understanding of wind turbine operations and maintenance procedures, and to be familiar with standard operating procedures.
Assessment
After completing the training, participants take a theoretical test.
Certification
On successful completion you receive a Maersk Training certificate. The certificate is valid for three years and is recognised worldwide within the wind energy sector.
Course content
The WTSR course covers how to manage operations and maintenance on wind turbines safely, focusing on system hazards, role responsibilities, safe systems of work and the use of approved procedures. It is structured around five areas:
- Operations: managing operations on wind turbines
- Maintenance: managing maintenance on wind turbines
- Hazards: understanding and mitigating hazards in the wind turbine environment
- Roles and responsibilities: understanding the roles and responsibilities involved in wind turbine operations
- Safe systems of work: managing and using the systems that maintain safety and integrity during operations
Learning objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Understand why the WTSR exist and why they matter for both general safety and system safety
- Identify and define "the system" and its boundary points, including plant and low voltage (LV) equipment
- Explain the relationship between general safety and inherent system danger in order to recognise hazards and prevent incidents
- Describe the five stages of managing a task safely under the WTSR framework
- Apply safety precautions and principles to stay protected from electro-mechanical and system-derived hazards
- Name and understand the documents used to manage safety, including Approved Written Procedures (AWPs), Routine Operating Procedures (ROPs) and management instructions
- Recognise nominated and authorised roles, such as Authorised Technicians, Authorising Engineers, Operational Controllers and other selected personnel
- Understand the policy, philosophy and principles behind the WTSR and how they sit within the UK legal framework and safety management systems
- Demonstrate behavioural awareness and risk perception, including stopping work when it is unsafe and leading by example in applying the WTSR
- Communicate effectively, especially during Transfer of Control procedures, with awareness of potential human errors
