Level-1 Well Control Awareness Course available for free

The International Well Control Forum has launched a global online training course which will be free to everyone in the industry to increase knowledge around drilling and well intervention operations as well as what can cause a well blow-out and potential oil spill incident.

The interactive e-learning has been developed in response to the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers’ (IOGP) recommendations following the Macondo well blow-out which stated an introductory level 1 awareness training should be introduced. The online training modules will start with an introduction on how reservoirs are formed and the lifecycle of a well through to drilling and intervention activity and finally hazards, prevention methods and industry techniques to deal with a blowout with real life examples on Macondo and other incidents. Each module can be easily completed in half a day with the whole course taking around two days.

With the introduction of Level 1 the entire portfolio of well control courses are complete. Higher levels 2,3 and 4 are already available at Maersk Training as classroom courses along with more advanced simulator courses, Team Based Well Control and Enhanced Well Control, including human factors.

The New Course

The course is aimed at personnel who have secondary involvement in well operations, for example office based staff or third parties who are involved in rig evacuations. The course is also a useful e-learning tool for students and graduates wanting to enter into the industry.

Level-1 contains of 7 modules:

• Module 1: Overview of Oil and Gas
• Module 2: Life Cycle of a Well
• Module 3: Drilling Rigs
• Module 4: Well Control During Drilling Operations
• Module 5: Well Intervention and Workover
• Module 6: Pressure Control During Well Intervention
• Module 7: Conclusion

At the end of each module there is a Knowledge Check to confirm your learning from that module. Once all 7 modules are complete there is a short exam where if you pass with a grade of 70%+ then you can print out your Level-1 certificate from home.
