Purpose

Effective firefighting on board a vessel demands two distinct but connected capabilities: the ability to respond as a competent crew member, and the ability to lead and control firefighting operations under pressure. This combined refresher course maintains both. By revalidating Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (Grundlæggende Brandbekæmpelse, A-VI/1-2) and Advanced Fire Fighting (Avanceret Brandbekæmpelse, A-VI/3) in a single programme, it ensures that deck and engineering officers retain the operational firefighting skills and the leadership capability required to manage fire emergencies effectively. Delivered at Maersk Training's Esbjerg facility through a blend of theory and realistic practical exercises, the course meets the refresher requirements of STCW Sections A-VI/1-2 and A-VI/3, as amended by the Manila Amendments 2010.

Essential Information

Prerequisites

Delegates must hold a valid or recently expired STCW certificate in both A-VI/1-2 and A-VI/3. A valid offshore medical certificate or completed medical self-declaration form is required before commencing the course. Delegates must be physically capable of participating in all practical exercises, including smoke diving. Delegates who are unable to perform smoke diving must present a DMA-approved medical certificate with an endorsement from the medical examiner confirming this. They may still participate in the course in a modified capacity.

Who is it for?

This course is designed for seafarers and offshore personnel who are required to refresh both their basic and advanced firefighting certification. It is particularly relevant for deck and engineering officers, Masters, Chief Mates, Chief Engineers, and Second Engineers who are designated to control firefighting operations on board.

Assessment

Delegates are assessed through practical firefighting exercises demonstrating individual and team competence, alongside continuous instructor evaluation during scenarios. Competence is verified in line with STCW Tables A-VI/1-2 and A-VI/3.

Certification

Upon successful completion, delegates receive two refreshed STCW certificates: Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (A-VI/1-2) and Advanced Fire Fighting (A-VI/3). Both are valid for five years in accordance with the STCW refresher training requirements.

Course content

Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (STCW A-VI/1-2)

The fire triangle, fire classification (classes A to F), sources of ignition, and how fires spread on board a vessel
Shipboard firefighting organisation, including location of firefighting appliances, emergency procedures, and escape routes
Fire prevention measures and actions to minimise the risk of fire on board, including identification of fire hazards
Correct use of portable fire extinguishers and selection of the appropriate extinguishing agent for each class of fire
Use of hoses, nozzles, and breathing apparatus in firefighting operations, including correct donning and doffing procedures

Advanced Fire Fighting (STCW A-VI/3)

Smoke diver behaviour and technique, including entering and searching a room in zero-visibility conditions
Extinguishing techniques and the correct application of water and foam as extinguishing agents
Control of firefighting operations on board ship, with particular emphasis on organisation, tactics, and command
Communication and coordination during firefighting operations, including ventilation control, smoke extraction, and control of fuel and electrical systems
Organisation and training of onboard fire parties, investigation and reporting of fire incidents, and coordination with shore-based fire fighters
