What certificates do I receive?

On successful completion you receive three certificates: Offshore MOB Boat Coxswain, Lifeboat Captain, and Fast Rescue Boat Coxswain. All three are valid for four years and share the same expiry date.

Can I take the individual courses separately?

Yes. Maersk Training offers the MOB Boat Coxswain and Fast Rescue Boat Coxswain as a standalone 2-in-1 course. Please contact our team to confirm which combination best suits your role and installation requirements.

How many delegates are in each session?

Sessions run with a minimum of two and a maximum of eight delegates. All practical water-based exercises are conducted at a maximum ratio of four delegates per instructor.

You will need valid photographic identification and your blue book or offshore medical health certificate. Bring a change of dry clothing for the water-based practical exercises. All specialist equipment including immersion suits, lifejackets, radios, and PPE is provided by Maersk Training.

When do I need to recertify?

All three certificates are valid for four years. Please contact our team to discuss the appropriate refresher course before your certificates expire.

Purpose of 4 in 1 Offshore Boat Training

On an offshore installation, three distinct boat command roles demand three distinct sets of skills: leading a man overboard response as MOB Boat Coxswain (MOB Båd Coxswain), taking charge of a lifeboat evacuation as Lifeboat Captain (Redningsbådsfører), and operating a fast rescue craft in high-speed rescue conditions as Fast Rescue Boat Coxswain (Hurtig Redningsbåd Coxswain). This three-in-one course qualifies delegates in all three disciplines in a single efficient programme at Maersk Training's Esbjerg facility. Combining theoretical instruction with extensive practical exercises at sea, it ensures that designated personnel are ready to take command across the full range of offshore boat emergencies. The course meets the requirements of the 1995 STCW Convention, Sections A-VI/2-1 and A-VI/2-2, and is approved by the Danish Maritime Authority

Essential Information

Prerequisites

Delegates must be 18 years of age or above and hold a valid medical booklet for seafarers (blue book) or equivalent offshore medical health certificate. A completed medical self-declaration form must be signed prior to commencing the course. Some elements are physically demanding and take place on open water. Delegates must be physically capable of participating fully in all exercises.

Who is it for?

This course is designed for offshore installation personnel designated as coxswain or captain of a MOB boat, lifeboat, or fast rescue boat, who require initial certification across all three roles. It is relevant across the oil and gas, renewables, and offshore maritime sectors in the Danish North Sea and beyond.

Assessment

Delegates are assessed entirely through direct observation of practical exercises conducted on the water, in accordance with the learning outcomes specified in STCW Sections A-VI/2-1 and A-VI/2-2.

Certification

Upon successful completion, delegates receive three certificates: an Offshore MOB Boat Coxswain certificate, a Lifeboat Captain certificate, and a Fast Rescue Boat Coxswain certificate. All three certificates are valid for four years and share the same expiry date, simplifying recertification planning.

Course Content

MOB Boat Coxswain

Construction, outfitting, and maintenance of MOB boats, including operation of davit launching and recovery systems and on-load and off-load release devices
Launching and recovering the MOB boat in various sea conditions, including rough weather handling and use of painter and sea anchor
Navigation and seamanship including compass steering, manoeuvring in tidal conditions, and coordinating rescue patterns in the vicinity of an offshore platform
Managing survivors at sea, including the effects of hypothermia, use of immersion suits and thermal protective aids, and helicopter rescue procedures
Use of communication and signalling equipment including portable VHF radio, EPIRB, SART, and pyrotechnic distress signals

Lifeboat Captain

Roles and responsibilities of the Lifeboat Captain, including command duties during preparation for abandonment and after launching
Inspection, maintenance, and operational checks of lifeboat systems, including propulsion, steering, and safety equipment
Launching and manoeuvring a lifeboat from an offshore installation, including clearing the ship's side and operating in congested or rough water conditions
Management of survivors aboard the lifeboat, including coordinating with the installation's emergency response team and external rescue services
Applying first aid to survivors, including CPR, treatment of hypothermia, and use of the onboard first aid kit

Fast Rescue Boat Coxswain

Construction, characteristics, and equipment of fast rescue boats, including maintenance and emergency repairs
Safe launching and recovery of fast rescue boats in various sea and weather conditions, including high-speed manoeuvring and operation in adverse conditions
Executing search and rescue operations, including performing effective search patterns and accounting for environmental factors
Recovery of survivors from the water and management of casualties aboard the fast rescue boat
Use of communications and signalling equipment between the fast rescue boat, helicopter, and installation, including radios and pyrotechnics

Freefall Lifeboat Coxswain

Roles and responsibilities of the Freefall Lifeboat Coxswain, including maintaining operational readiness and conducting pre-launch checks of the Totally Enclosed Motor Propelled Survival Craft (TEMPSC)
Preparation for launch, including checking the internal and external integrity of the TEMPSC, removing mechanical restraints, and safely boarding passengers
Starting the TEMPSC engine using both primary and secondary start systems, and launching the freefall lifeboat clear of the installation
Manoeuvring the TEMPSC to a safe area, including use of compass, sea anchor, and operating in hazardous environments following a freefall launch
Towing and pacing of another lifeboat, recovery of persons in the water, and use of radio, pyrotechnics, and emergency equipment
