Air Monitoring and Gas Detection Training

Introduction

This course gives participants an understanding of air monitoring methods, instrumentation and the interpretation of monitoring data. Participants learn about atmospheric hazards, sampling techniques, detector function and the practical use of air monitoring equipment. The course supports safe decision-making during work where oxygen deficiency or enrichment, flammable gases, toxic substances, dust or IDLH atmospheres may be present.

Who is it for

Employees who perform air monitoring or gas testing, including confined space entrants, attendants and entry supervisors. It also suits emergency response team members, supervisors and managers overseeing hazardous work, employees working around atmospheric hazards and employees required to wear respiratory protection.

Prerequisite

There are no formal prerequisites for this course.

Assessment

Participants are assessed through facilitated group discussion. The discussion confirms their understanding of atmospheric hazards, detector selection, instrument readiness checks, testing requirements, alarm response and documentation of monitoring results.

Certification

Upon completion you will receive a Maersk Training certificate.

Course content

• About Air Monitors: Introduction to air monitoring equipment, detector types, sensor packages and common applications.
• Atmospheric Hazards: Overview of oxygen deficiency and enrichment, flammable atmospheres, toxic atmospheres, dust hazards and IDLH conditions.
• General Function: Basic operation of air monitoring equipment, including instrument checks, sampling methods, readings, alarms and documentation requirements.

Learning objectives

• Identify oxygen, flammable, toxic, dust and IDLH atmospheres.
• Select the correct detector, sensor package and sampling method for the work activity.
• Verify instrument readiness through bump testing, calibration and documentation.
• Test atmospheres using the correct order, location and frequency for atmospheric monitoring.
• Respond appropriately to alarms, abnormal trends and failed instrument checks.
• Document readings, conditions, changes and QA/QC information.
