The purpose of the Authorised Gas Tester course is to ensure that participants preparing for the role of gas tester have the appropriate skills and knowledge to safely carry out gas tests that verify oxygen, toxic gas and flammable gas levels in the atmosphere of a confined space. The course covers the applicable legislation, safe systems of work, the permit-to-work system, gas hazards and characteristics, the use and testing of gas detectors, and respiratory protective equipment.

LO1 - Describe confined spaces, the role of the Authorized Gas Tester and the legislation and regulations applicable to confined space entry.
LO2 - Explain safe systems of work for confined space entry, including risk assessment, isolation, Permit to Work, standby person duties and rescue planning.
LO3 - Describe gases that may be present in confined spaces, including their characteristics, behaviour, exposure limits and effects of overexposure.
LO4 - Carry out atmospheric testing for oxygen, flammable and toxic gases, including detector checks, ventilation, sampling, interpretation and continuous monitoring.
LO5 - Identify respiratory protective equipment and PPE used during gas testing, including their limitations and inspection requirements.
