The Maersk Training DP CPD programme is designed in the simplest format, 1 module per year, and is designed directly by DP instructors with 25+ years of delivering DP training. Additionally, the modules are developed with DP operators in mind, and always contextualise the DP topics in relation to actual operations. Some other providers are either very focused on regulations or tailored to individual companies.

You can enrol on Maersk Training’s DP CPD e-learning programme and start Year 1 at any time. Then, each subsequent year of CPD e-learning will become available to you in line with the NI requirements. This is to prevent learners from completing all modules in one go, as the programme is intended to provide ‘continuous learning’.

How is Maersk Training’s NI-accredited DP CPD e-learning programme structured and how does it work?

The content comprises an e-learning curriculum for each year in line with Nautical Institute requirements. The modules comprise content on the following areas: DP Regulations and Guidance DP Testing and Trials DP Redundancy Concepts DP Position Reference System and Sensors DP System Computer, Controllers and Networks Power and Power Generation Systems and UPS Thrusters and Thruster Control Systems DP Operations DP Testing & Trials Each yearly e-learning module has a final exam with a pass mark of 80%. Learners will take a different e-learning refresher module every year, complemented by a comprehensive Online Revalidation Exam (hosted by the NI) after five years. Yes. Each module (‘Year’) of e-learning has an integrated final end-of-module test, in which you must achieve 80% or more to ‘complete’ the module and receive your end-of-year completion certificate.

Do I receive a completion certificate for each module (‘Year’) of e-learning completed?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Once you achieve the 80% pass mark at the end of each e-learning module, you will receive a completion certificate which is automatically generated by the Learning Management System. This completion certificate lists the contents covered in each e-learning module and has a unique certificate number. You will be required to use these as evidence of completion of CPD ‘Years’ when applying for your Online Revalidation Exam with the Nautical Institute.

Can I change DP CPD provider half-way through my CPD?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Completion of each e-learning module (‘Year’) generates a completion certificate. Successful completion of each CPD module will also be communicated to the NI as the accrediting body. You can continue the CPD journey with another CPD provider if desired. Similarly, you can enter Maersk Training’s CPD at a certain year based on certification from another CPD provider of earlier modules. As an example - you can have 1 completed year of CPD from another provider and then switch to Maersk Training’s CPD for the remaining 4 years of CPD to make the full 5 Years required for revalidation.

What is the ‘Online Revalidation Exam’?

The Online Revalidation Exam is the Nautical Institute-hosted Online Revalidation Exam as required by the Nautical Institute requirements and this is not administered by Maersk Training. Throughout my DP CPD Programme, when do I need to take the NI-hosted ‘Online Revalidation Exam’?

When you take the NI-hosted Online Revalidation Exam depends on when your current certificate requires validation. For example, if your current certificate expires in July 2025, you will need to complete two years of DP CPD e-learning (Year 1 in 2024 and Year 2 in 2025) and then book and take the NI Online Revalidation Exam before you can revalidate. What is the pass mark for the NI-hosted Online Revalidation Exam?

The Online Revalidation Exam is hosted and administered by the Nautical Institute. The pass mark for the exam is 70%. If you fail to achieve this on your first attempt, you will have two more attempts to pass the exam.

When should I apply to the NI for Revalidation of my certificate?

You are only able to apply for revalidation via the NI if it is within 6 months of your certificate's expiry date. The NI’s online platform will not allow you to start the online application process more than 6 months before the date that your certificate expires. What happens if I am unable to complete the new Revalidation requirements in time?

All learners whose certificates are due to expire between 1st January 2024 and 31st December 2028, and have been unable to complete the new requirements for revalidating their certificate, will be issued with a 12-month indemnity letter once their online application via the NI has been submitted/paid. The applicant must complete the new requirements of the CPD and/or courses and resubmit their application within a year of the issue date of the indemnity letter to be eligible to apply.

Where do I record DP drills that are required for Revalidation?

IMCA and NI recommend that learners log DP Drills in the IMCA logbook in the same place where they log their service on the DP vessels. In the logbook, under the column ‘activity codes’ write ‘other: DP Drills’, This ensures that the NI can identify that drills have been completed as required. There is no need to include reports on individual drills.

What is Maersk Training’s mobile CPD App?

This mobile App is intended for individuals whose employer has entered an agreement with Maersk Training. It will help you keep track of the entire CPD journey, reminding you when to take each of the e-Learning modules. IMPORTANT: You cannot download and use the App as an individual – your employer must have entered an agreement with Maersk Training first.

It can be downloaded from Google Play and the Apple App Store – search for Maersk Training TMS. To be able to activate your account and use the App, you must have received an onboarding e-mail from Maersk Training first.

What is the difference between Maersk Training’s mobile CPD App and the companion website?

Accepted Answer

The mobile App supports push notifications, when it is time to book the next module (if you don’t use the App, you will get notified by e-mail). The App also allows you to view your certificates while offline.

What happens, when I tap the “Book” button for a DP/CPD Module?

Accepted Answer

The button is replaced by “Request Initiated”. This means that within 48 hours, you will be enrolled in the e-learning module (‘Year’) and receive Joining Instructions by e-mail.

If you book from the App (or the companion website), payment will be picked up by your employer.

How do I upload older certificates?

You go to the menu item “Qualifications”, go to the “Upload” tab and select “Other Training”. If you use the App, you can take a picture using the camera in your phone – you can also upload a PDF or an older picture

How will it work for an employee who leaves a company before the end of the 5-year period? Is this continued by the individual and, if so, how much is the cost per year to them?

Accepted Answer

CPD follows the individual. So, if you leave the company, the CPD completed while at that company is still valid for you personally. If you buy further CPD modules, you can either do this as individuals at 50 EUROS per module/year, or via your next employer. There is no fee to leave or enter the scheme itself, only for purchasing individual modules, with a rebate if buying all 5 years in one go (50 EUROs per year if buying as individual years; 200 EUROs when buying full 5-year programme upfront.)
