This HAZWOPER Operations course provides participants with essential knowledge and safety awareness for responding to hazardous materials incidents at an operational level. The course introduces key HAZWOPER requirements, hazardous materials terminology, hazard recognition, risk assessment, personal protective equipment, spill response, containment, decontamination, and termination procedures.

Participants will learn how to recognise hazardous substances, assess basic risks, select and use appropriate PPE, and support safe control, containment, or confinement activities within their level of training and capability. The course also covers hazard communication, infectious disease hazards, emergency response planning, and relevant standard operating procedures.

Through classroom discussion, practical examples, and tabletop exercises, participants will develop the knowledge required to support safe and effective hazardous materials response and demonstrate understanding through a written examination.

Who is it for?

This course is intended for personnel who may respond to hazardous materials incidents at an operational or first responder level and require basic HAZWOPER awareness and emergency response training. It is suitable for personnel working in industrial, offshore, maritime, energy, construction, logistics, and operational environments where hazardous substances may be present.

Assessment

The candidate will be required to pass a written exam. The course will also include tabletop scenarios

Certification

After successful completion you will receive a Maersk Training Certificate.

HAZWOPER Overview & Compliance

HAZWOPER standard, legal background, key agencies, responsibilities, safety and health programmes, worker protection, medical surveillance, and training requirements

Hazard Recognition & Communication

Hazardous substances and wastes, chemical hazards, infectious disease hazards, hazard recognition, Safety Data Sheets, container labelling, and HazCom requirements

Risk Assessment & Control Measures

Hazard identification, job hazard analysis, hierarchy of controls, basic risk assessment techniques, and common safety hazards

Personal Protective Equipment

Selection and use of safety equipment, head protection, eye and face protection, chemical protective clothing, gloves, boots, levels of protection, and respiratory protection

Incident Response & Spill Management

Incidental spills versus emergency response, spill and release awareness, emergency response plans, APIE response process, Emergency Response Guidebook, and basic containment or confinement actions

Decontamination & Termination

Decontamination methods and solutions, contamination prevention, hazardous waste, standard operating procedures, and termination procedures

Practical Activities

Classroom discussion, hazard identification activities, tabletop exercises, and marine debris awareness
