Introduction to Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Tanker Cargo and Ballast Handling Simulator Refresher (LCHS)

The LNG Liquefied Cargo Handling Simulator Refresher Course is designed to help officers involved in LNG cargo operations maintain and refresh their practical competence in routine and emergency LNG tanker procedures. The course combines theory and simulator-based exercises in a realistic cloud-based environment, allowing participants to reinforce safe operational planning, cargo system handling, emergency response, and decision-making. The course is aligned with the principles of IMO Model Course 1.36 and relevant industry expectations, including SIGTTO guidance.

Essential information

Prerequisites

Participants should be operational or management level deck officers, including Gas Engineers, who are currently serving on LNG vessels or have previous experience in LNG cargo operations. Participants should already have knowledge of LNG tanker cargo systems, cargo handling procedures, shipboard safety requirements, and emergency response practices and hold relevant certification.

Who is it for?

This course is intended for officers involved in LNG cargo operations who need to refresh, maintain, or demonstrate continued competence in routine and emergency LNG tanker cargo handling.

Assessment

Participants are assessed through practical simulator observation and a multiple-choice questionnaire. The practical observation focuses on the participant’s ability to apply LNG cargo handling procedures, monitor system conditions, respond to alarms and emergency scenarios, and demonstrate safe operational decision-making during simulator exercises.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a Maersk Training Certificate.

Course content

LO1

Plan and execute key LNG tanker cargo operations safely, including inerting, gassing up, cooling down, loading, unloading, liquid freeing, warming up, and venting.

LO2

Use LNG vessel instrumentation, control systems, ballast systems, BWTS, BOG management methods, and ESD systems to support safe cargo operations.

LO3

Manage loaded passage, ballast passage, pre-docking, and post-dry dock cargo operations in accordance with safe operating procedures and industry best practice.

LO4

Respond effectively to simulated LNG cargo emergency scenarios using appropriate procedures, communication, teamwork, and operational decision-making.

Review and simulator-based practice of inerting operations as part of LNG cargo preparation and liquid freeing processes.

Cooling Down Operations

Simulator-based practice in cooling down cargo tanks and systems prior to LNG loading.

Loading Operations

Practical refresher on planning, monitoring, and safely conducting LNG loading operations.

Loaded Passage Operations

Review of cargo system monitoring, operational decision-making, and safety considerations during loaded passage.

BOG Management

Refresher on boil-off gas management methods, including monitoring, control, and operational decision-making.

Unloading Operations

Simulator-based practice in planning, monitoring, and safely conducting LNG unloading operations.

Ballast Passage Operations

Review of operational considerations during ballast passage following discharge of LNG cargo.

Liquid Freeing Operations

Refresher on liquid freeing operations and preparation of LNG cargo systems for subsequent operations.

Warming Up Operations

Review of warming up procedures prior to inspection, maintenance, or docking.

Venting Operations

Refresher on safe planning and execution of venting operations during LNG tanker cargo processes.

Pre-Docking Cargo Operations

Simulator-based refresher on pre-docking cargo operations and preparation of cargo systems before shipyard or dry dock entry.

ESD Systems

Review of emergency shutdown systems on board LNG vessels, including their function, activation, and operational implications.

Emergency LNG Cargo Scenarios

Simulator-based response to LNG cargo-related emergency scenarios, including risk mitigation, communication, and system control.
