Do I need to book separate courses if I only need to refresh one certificate?

Yes. If you only need to revalidate one module, please book the individual Personal Survival Techniques or Basic Fire Fighting refresher course. This combination programme is for delegates who need both at the same time.

Purpose of STCW 5in1 refresh: Survival

This five-in-one refresher course revalidates all five in a single programme at Maersk Training's Esbjerg facility, reducing time ashore and consolidating joining arrangements without compromising the standard of any individual module. All five modules meet the mandatory minimum standards of competence set out in STCW Sections A-VI/1, A-VI/2, and A-VI/3, as amended by the Manila Amendments 2010.

Essential Information

Prerequisites

Valid medical booklet for seafarers (blue book) or equivalent offshore health certificate
Minimum 18 years of age
Minimum 6 months seagoing service on ships ≥ 20 GT (documented)
Valid certificate of watchkeeping (for seafarers only)
Valid COC for Officers, Navigators, Chief Engineer or Engineers. (Seafarers who are under education to become ship officers, navigators, marine engineers, or chief engineers can participate on the course)
STCW certificates: 1-1, 1-2, 3, 2-1, and 2-2 (does not need to be valid) or equivalent offshore certificates
Captain-signed proclamation of onboard training submitted prior to attendance (Participants who haven’t got the necessary sea service can participate on the course but can’t get the official certificate before the necessary Sea service is acquired.)

Seafarers and offshore personnel with expired or soon-to-expire STCW certificates
Crew members designated to operate survival crafts, fast rescue boats or manage firefighting operations
Personnel seeking compliance with STCW Convention refresher requirements

Assessment

Delegates will be continuously assessed through:

Practical exercises and drills
Demonstrations of skills in lifeboat launching, rescue procedures, fire suppression and advanced tactics
Final evaluation by certified instructors

Certification

Upon successful completion, delegates receive:

STCW Refresher Certificates for all modules completed (A-VI/1-1, 1-2, 3, 2-1, 2-2), valid for 5 years.

Course content

Personal Survival Techniques (STCW A-VI/1-1)

Types of emergency situations at sea and correct initial actions on becoming aware of an emergency, including muster procedures and abandonment signals
Survival equipment including lifejackets, immersion suits, and liferafts, covering correct donning, use, and contents
Principles of survival at sea, including the effects of hypothermia and cold water immersion, and actions to maximise survival chances in the water and aboard a survival craft
Launching and boarding survival craft, including righting an inverted liferaft and actions to take after abandonment
Use of locating and signalling equipment, including EPIRBs, SARTs, portable radios, and pyrotechnic distress signals

Basic Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention (STCW A-VI/1-2)

The fire triangle, fire classification (classes A to F), sources of ignition, and how fires spread on board a vessel
Shipboard firefighting organisation, including location of firefighting appliances, emergency procedures, and escape routes
Correct use of portable fire extinguishers and selection of the appropriate extinguishing agent for each fire class
Practical firefighting scenarios using hoses, breathing apparatus, and team-based response in realistic conditions
Fire prevention measures and initial response procedures to minimise the risk of fire on board

Advanced Fire Fighting (STCW A-VI/3)

Control of firefighting operations on board ship, including firefighting procedures at sea and in port with particular emphasis on organisation, tactics, and command
Communication and coordination during firefighting operations, including ventilation control, smoke extraction, and control of fuel and electrical systems
Organisation and training of onboard fire parties, including fire hazards associated with the storage and handling of materials and fire-fighting process hazards
Inspection, servicing, and maintenance of fire detection and extinguishing systems and equipment on board
Investigation and reporting of fire incidents, including procedures for coordination with shore-based fire fighters and management of injured persons

Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats (STCW A-VI/2-1)

Construction, outfitting, and characteristics of survival craft and rescue boats, including maintenance procedures and operation of davit launching and recovery systems
Launching and recovery of survival craft, including safe use of on-load and off-load release devices and clearing the ship's side
Practical boat handling at sea, including compass navigation, manoeuvring, and handling craft in varying weather and current conditions from Esbjerg Harbour
Use of locating and signalling equipment including pyrotechnic distress signals, portable VHF radio, EPIRB, and SART
Righting an inverted liferaft while wearing a lifejacket, using both single and double righting techniques

Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats (STCW A-VI/2-2)

Construction, characteristics, and equipment of fast rescue boats, including maintenance, emergency repairs, and inflation and deflation of buoyancy compartments
Safe launching and recovery of fast rescue boats in various sea and weather conditions, including high-speed manoeuvring and operation without GPS
Performing search patterns accounting for environmental factors, and conducting rescue operations including recovery of survivors from the water
Use of communications and signalling equipment between the fast rescue boat, a helicopter, and a ship, including radios and pyrotechnics
Applying first aid to casualties on board the fast rescue boat and managing the welfare of recovered survivors
