Purpose

In emergency situations requiring abandonment or rescue at sea, the ability to take command of a survival craft and operate a fast rescue boat effectively can mean the difference between life and loss. This combined refresher course maintains both the operational competence and the decision-making capability required to manage survival craft and fast rescue boats in real emergency conditions. By revalidating Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats (Kvalifikationer i Overlevelsesmidler og Redningsbåde, A-VI/2-1) and Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats (Kvalifikationer i Hurtige Redningsbåde, A-VI/2-2) in a single programme, it ensures participants remain ready to respond with confidence and competence. Delivered through a combination of theory and intensive practical exercises at Maersk Training's Esbjerg facility, the course meets the refresher requirements of STCW Sections A-VI/2-1 and A-VI/2-2, as amended by the Manila Amendments 2010.

Essential Information

Prerequisites

Delegates must meet the following requirements to attend:

Valid medical booklet for seafarers (blue book) or equivalent offshore medical health certificate
Minimum 18 years of age
Minimum six months of seagoing service on ships of 20 gross tonnes or above, documented in a discharge book
Valid Certificate of Watchkeeping (for seafarers only)
STCW certificates in A-VI/2-1 and A-VI/2-2 (certificates do not need to be currently valid)

Delegates who do not yet hold the necessary seagoing service may still attend and complete the course, but will not receive the official certificate until the required sea service has been acquired.

Who is it for?

This course is designed for seafarers and offshore personnel who need to refresh their Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (A-VI/2-1) and Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats (A-VI/2-2) certifications. It is relevant across the maritime, oil and gas, and offshore sectors.

Assessment

Delegates are assessed through practical demonstrations of survival craft and rescue boat operations, alongside continuous instructor evaluation during exercises. Competence is verified in line with STCW Tables A-VI/2-1 and A-VI/2-2.

Course Content

Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats (STCW A-VI/2-1)

Construction, outfitting, and characteristics of survival craft and rescue boats, including maintenance procedures and operation of davit launching and recovery systems
Launching and recovery of survival craft, including safe use of on-load and off-load release devices and clearing the ship's side
Taking charge of a survival craft or rescue boat during and after launch, including lifeboat engine operation and associated systems
Management and control of survivors in emergency situations, covering hypothermia prevention, use of immersion suits and thermal protective aids, and casualty handling
Use of locating and signalling equipment including pyrotechnic distress signals, portable VHF radio, EPIRB, and SART
Righting an inverted liferaft while wearing a lifejacket, using both single and double righting techniques

Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats (STCW A-VI/2-2)

Construction, characteristics, and equipment of fast rescue boats, including maintenance, emergency repairs, and inflation and deflation of buoyancy compartments
Safe launching and recovery of fast rescue boats in various sea and weather conditions, including high-speed manoeuvring and operation in adverse conditions
Executing search and rescue operations effectively, including performing search patterns and accounting for environmental factors
Use of communications and signalling equipment between the fast rescue boat, a helicopter, and a ship, including radios and pyrotechnics
Responding to and managing emergency scenarios under pressure, including recovery of survivors from the water and application of survival techniques to enhance survivability after abandonment
