Introduction to STCW Basic Safety Training for Seafarers
The course provides participants with the basic knowledge, understanding and practical skills required to respond to emergencies, protect themselves and others, and contribute to safe operations onboard ship.
The training covers the competence requirements of STCW Tables A-VI/1-1, A-VI/1-2, A-VI/1-3 and A-VI/1-4.

Prerequisites
No prerequisites.

Who is it for?
Seafarers who will serve onboard a vessel, regardless of position or function. The course represents the mandatory minimum basic safety training requirement for seafarers.

Assessment
Participants must pass a written test with a minimum score of 80%. The written assessment is designed so that the 80% pass mark meets the Norwegian Maritime Authority requirement for full achievement of the required competence. All required practical exercises must be completed. Participants are observed individually by the instructor during practical exercises. The instructor assesses whether the participant demonstrates the required knowledge, understanding and practical skills in accordance with the applicable minimum competence standards.

Certification
Upon successful completion you will receive certification covering the competence requirements of STCW Tables A-VI/1-1, A-VI/1-2, A-VI/1-3 and A-VI/1-4, valid for 5 years
Course content
Emergencies and Evacuation
Emergency situations, evacuation procedures and appropriate actions during onboard emergencies.
Survival Craft and Rescue Boats
Purpose and use of survival craft and rescue boats during emergency and abandonment situations.
Personal Lifesaving Equipment
Use of personal lifesaving appliances and practical survival techniques.
Fire Theory
Principles of fire, fire prevention and firefighting.
Breathing Apparatus
Practical use of breathing apparatus during firefighting and in smoke-filled environments.
First Aid
Basic first aid principles and immediate response to injury or illness onboard.
Personal Safety
Personal safety responsibilities and safe behaviour while working onboard.
Key Learning Objectives
LO1 - Demonstrate competence in personal survival techniques in accordance with STCW Table A-VI/1-1.
LO2 - Demonstrate competence in fire prevention and firefighting in accordance with STCW Table A-VI/1-2.
LO3 - Demonstrate competence in elementary first aid in accordance with STCW Table A-VI/1-3.
LO4 - Demonstrate competence in personal safety and social responsibilities in accordance with STCW Table A-VI/1-4.
