Introduction to STCW High Voltage Safety

This course aims to provide seafarers in charge of safe control and management of high voltage power systems, the essential education and training in high voltage installations, managing trouble shooting, and restoration of electrical equipment to good operating conditions.

Prerequisites

Holders of certificate according to STCW Code table A-III/1 – III /2 – III/3 – III/6 Engine, and Regulation III/6 for ETOs or equivalent level of education.

Marine engineers and electrotechnical officers on vessels (marine industry) who work with high voltage equipment or environments

Assessment

"Participant knowledge, skills and abilities will be assessed on an ongoing basis during practical scenario-based exercises, by means of direct observation and verbal questioning, to support the overall summative evaluation of the participant. With a final written/multiple answers test. "

Certification

After successful completion, you will receive a Maersk Training certificate.

Course content

Human Factors, Safety Mindset and Behaviour

Introduces the behavioural and human factors that support safe high voltage operations, including situational awareness, communication, decision-making, and personal accountability.

Vessel High Voltage Systems and Equipment

Provides an overview of general high voltage systems and equipment found onboard vessels, including key components, operational principles, and typical applications.

Hazards and Risks in HV Environments

Covers the main hazards associated with high voltage environments, including electric shock, arc flash, stored energy, and system-related risks. Includes safe job analysis and risk assessment principles.

Safety and Control Measures

Explains the control measures required for safe work in high voltage areas, including the Five Basic Safety Rules, use of PPE, barriers, isolation, and access control.

Regulations, Standards, Guidelines and Company Rules

Introduces relevant regulatory requirements, industry standards, guidelines, and company-specific high voltage procedures that support safe and compliant operations.

HV Switching and Scenario-Based Practical Activities

Uses practical scenarios to develop awareness of high voltage switching operations, including toolbox talks, communication protocols, hierarchy of switching, roles and responsibilities, and controlled work environments.

Safety Documentation, LOTO and Controlled Work

Covers the execution of work under safety documentation, including permit systems, lockout-tagout procedures, isolation confirmation, and responsibilities during controlled high voltage work.

Tools, Equipment and Absence of Voltage Testing

Introduces the tools, PPE, and methods used to confirm absence of voltage, including arc protection, Prove-Test-Prove, Hot-Cold-Hold, and safe testing practices.

Earthing and Securing the Work Area

Covers the application of breaker earthing and local working earths to ensure a safe working condition before work is carried out on high voltage equipment.

Black-Out Procedure

Explains the principles and sequence of response during a vessel black-out, including safety priorities, communication, system recovery, and operational awareness.
