Introduction to STCW Medical First Aid Refresher
The course refreshes and maintains the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required to provide immediate medical first aid in the event of accident or illness onboard ship, in accordance with STCW Table A-VI/4-1.
Essential information

Prerequisites
Participants must have previously completed Medical First Aid training. If the competence has expired, participants must document at least 12 months of sea service while holding a valid course certificate or officer certificate. The sea service is calculated within the 5 years preceding the course start date.

Who is it for?
Seafarers who require refresher training in medical first aid onboard ship. Medical First Aid training is required for officers serving onboard vessels.

Assessment
Participants must pass a written test with a minimum score of 80%. The written assessment is designed so that the 80% pass mark meets the Norwegian Maritime Authority requirement for full achievement of the required competence. All required practical exercises must be completed. Participants are observed individually by the instructor during practical exercises. The instructor assesses whether the participant demonstrates the required knowledge, understanding and practical skills in accordance with the applicable minimum competence standards.

Certification
Upon successful completion you will receive a certificate valid for 5 years in accordance with STCW Table A-VI/4-1.

CPR and ABC
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and systematic casualty assessment using ABC principles.
Medical Chest
Contents, purpose and appropriate use of the ship’s medical chest.
Anatomy and Physiology
Basic structure and functions of the human body relevant to medical first aid.
Toxicological Hazards
Recognition and first aid management of exposure to toxic substances.
Spinal and Neck Injuries
Assessment and first aid management of suspected spinal and neck injuries.
Burns
Assessment and first aid treatment of burn injuries.
Fractures
Assessment and first aid management of fractures and associated injuries.
Rescued Persons
Medical first aid and care of persons rescued from the sea.
Radio Medico
Use of Radio Medico to obtain medical advice and support for treatment onboard.
Pharmacology
Basic pharmacological principles relevant to medical first aid onboard.
Psychology
Psychological considerations when supporting casualties during emergencies.
