• Recognise and apply standard communication pro-words, including “Over” and “Out”.
• Use the phonetic alphabet to communicate information more clearly, particularly in noisy or emergency situations.

Course content

History of maritime communication

Participants are introduced to the development of maritime communication and its importance in supporting safe, coordinated operations.

Introduction to GMDSS

The course covers the essentials of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System and its role as a globally accepted approach to maritime safety communication.

Types of marine communication equipment

Participants become familiar with communication equipment commonly used across maritime and offshore environments.

Practical use of VHF equipment

Practical exercises give participants experience in operating and handling handheld VHF radios for clear and reliable communication.

Standard communication pro-words

Participants learn how to use recognised pro-words to keep radio exchanges concise, clear and structured.

Phonetic alphabet

Participants practise using the phonetic alphabet to communicate letters, names and other important information accurately.
