Oil & Gas
Oil & Gas training started with Maersk more than 40 years ago.
From the very beginning, the focus was on the technical side and the Human Factor aspect. We quickly realized that these are inseparable when it comes to increasing operational safety and efficiency in Operations.
At Maersk Training, we strive to put the learning in focus. By providing our students with hands-on experience. Providing the best learning outcome for our delegates and ensuring a better learning experience is consistently met.
Our instructors come from the industry in which we offer solutions. This guarantees common ground where our instructors understand the challenges the students face in their daily jobs.
The success and quality of our safety training have allowed us to expand our business to include;
- Onboard Coaching
- Performance Improvement
What we use
- DS-6000

Process safety training for oil & gas production enhances both process safety and performance.
Process safety incidents are a part of every oil & gas operators reality. Ask yourself how many process safety-related shutdowns or production losses you had last year and what the impact on your bottom line would have been if you had avoided just half of them? Or imagine what a 1% higher output from your mature fields would do to your bottom line? Maersk Training has developed a process safety training programme for oil & gas production that can help you improve both process safety and performance
The potential for reducing process safety incidents increases substantially when you train closer to reality.
Today the human factor is responsible for many process safety incidents. Still, your personnel will acquire the necessary skills and competencies to handle daily challenges and critical events safely and effectively with our training programme. They will train closer to their everyday reality, using our production facility mock-up and advanced Kongsberg K-Spice Learn process simulators.
Our training programme will reduce the number of process-related incidents
All personnel will understand the process flow and procedures and why operating discipline is important in handling daily challenges and critical events. The training programme consists of 6 different modules targeted at offshore production and operation and maintenance teams:
- Introduction to Offshore Oil & Gas Production
- Oil & Gas Production – Basic Course
- Process Safety – Hands-on Training
- Oil & Gas Production – Operator Course
- Oil & Gas Production – Advanced Operator Course
- Oil & Gas Emergency Response Training.
Benefits – our training programme will:
- Reduce the number of process safety-related incidents
- Reduce the risk of a major accident
- Reduce the number of process shutdowns
- Reduce start-up time after planned or unplanned shutdowns.
The human factor is responsible for a large number of process safety incidents
Every time a process safety-related incident causes a shutdown, you lose money. Still, Oil & Gas incidents are also potentially high-risk events due to the nature of hydrocarbons. Suppose a seemingly harmless event suddenly spins out of control due to poor operating discipline or poor decision making. In that case, you could find yourself in the middle of a major accident, similar to Piper Alpha or the Texas City disaster. Very few operators can withstand such a disastrous event, both in terms of the massive economic impact and the loss of reputation and trust from investors, employees, and authorities.
A lot of money has been invested in technology and improving hardware barriers. Some of these solutions are complex, and they only work in combination with solid competencies and procedural discipline. Maybe that is one of the reasons why human barriers fail more often. Poor decision-making, lack of situational awareness and complex procedures, poor procedural training and lack of awareness among senior management will significantly increase the risk of major incidents.
Simple things lead to shutdown and process safety incidents
A significant number of process safety-related incidents are due to simple, easy to fix issues, like, i.e.:
- Procedures are not always followed. Frontline personnel do not know them, do not understand them, or see the value in their daily work.
- On the job training reproduces bad habits existing in the organisation.
- Process plant operational procedures are not optimised.
- Often, process safety training is theoretical – this kind of training is a poor investment. Since competencies are not implemented in a working environment, behaviour does not change
- Cutting costs on training
Our Advanced Immersive Simulations will give you a safer, smoother and more effective drilling operation. Building competencies and trust between personnel will allow you to save time and reduce costs.
Poor people skills increase the risk of poor performance and major incidents.
Putting technically skilful people together to simulate a challenging operational environment gives them a unique opportunity to exercise their situational awareness, decision making, communication and working together.
Maersk Training’s Advanced Immersive Simulations prepares the operational drilling teams, operator teams and contractor teams for a well drilling operation. You test and align procedures through tailor-made training, minimise operational risks, and enhance performance between teams working together. The scope is to get a safer, smoother, and more effective operation to save time and reduce costs.
Are your personnel sufficiently prepared?
It is often a chain reaction of poor communication, poor decision-making and lack of situational awareness that leads to major incidents. One of the main reasons is that many personnel have never incurred an incident or challenging situation throughout their entire career. When an incident suddenly occurs, they are not prepared. Try asking yourself these simple questions: Can I expect personnel to respond correctly to a challenging situation they have never encountered or trained for? How significant is the risk that a situation could spin out of control because of poor people skills?
In Maersk Training immersive simulations, your personnel will have that challenging situation and feel the pressure! They will have to go through the procedures and checklist and communicate under tremendous pressure. They will learn how to handle the dynamic tension between people, and they will build the confidence to handle critical situations: ”I know what is happening. I know how to handle this situation. I made a mistake in the simulator, but I will not make the same mistake here in operations.”
The simulation setup
Our experienced instructors upload all relevant engineering data from a specific well into our drilling simulators and look at the potential problems that a specific well may offer. They create scenarios to challenge particular areas based on the drilling programme, with a strong focus on aligning procedures and bridging documents during the planning phase of the activities. This allows us to simulate well specific incidents and test procedures in a safe environment by creating unexpected emergencies such as loss of power, high seas, bad weather, fuel contamination, and the anomalies that can happen down the hole.
What can we offer?
- Minimise operational risk by testing drilling programme well specific procedures in a safe environment
- Increased productivity because of robust and team-based performance culture
- Potentially substantial cost savings
- Key personnel will have a solid understanding of the drilling programme and the operation
