Every offshore installation requires a trained team ready to respond the moment a helicopter emergency occurs. OPITO sets the international standard, and the duty holder is responsible for ensuring every appointed team member and leader is formally trained and currently certified before taking up their role.
Two roles form the helideck emergency response team. Both require initial OPITO certification before working offshore and must be revalidated every two years. Maersk Training delivers all four courses from our facility in Esbjerg.
The Offshore Helideck Assistant (HDA) on the frontline of the response team. Executes emergency procedures, operates firefighting equipment, and supports search and rescue under the team leader's command. HERTM is the initial qualification; HERTM-F is the two-yearly revalidation.
The Helicopter Landing Officer (HLO) who leads and coordinates the full emergency response team. Responsible for pre-planning, command during live scenarios, and directing team members. HERTL is the initial qualification; HERTL-F is the two-yearly revalidation.
Initial certification and two-yearly revalidation for Helideck Emergency Response Team Members and Leaders, all OPITO approved, all delivered in Esbjerg.
The four HERT courses follow a clear progression, from initial qualification through to ongoing revalidation. Your position depends on your current role and whether you hold a valid certificate.
