How often does this certificate need to be renewed?

The STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting certificate must be revalidated every five years under the Manila Amendments 2010. This refresher course satisfies that requirement.

Is this the same as the Advanced Fire Fighting refresher?

No. This course covers the Basic Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting standard (A-VI/1-2), which is required of all seafarers with safety duties. The Advanced Fire Fighting refresher (A-VI/3) is a separate course required specifically for those designated to control firefighting operations, typically deck and engineering officers. If you need both, Maersk Training offers combination refresher programmes covering multiple STCW modules in a single course.

You will need valid photographic identification, your current STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting certificate, and a medical fitness declaration. All firefighting equipment and training materials are provided by Maersk Training.

Purpose of STCW A-VI/1-2 Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting Refresher

Fire is one of the most serious risks on board any vessel, and every seafarer has a role to play in preventing it and responding to it effectively. This refresher course revalidates the Basic Fire Fighting (Grundlæggende Brandbekæmpelse, A-VI/1-2) certification required of all seafarers with designated safety duties, ensuring they remain competent to minimise the risk of fire, maintain a state of readiness, and use firefighting appliances correctly. Delivered at Maersk Training's Esbjerg facility, the course combines updated theory with hands-on practical exercises to keep skills current and certification valid.

The course meets the mandatory minimum standard of competence set out in STCW Section A-VI/1, Table A-VI/1-2, as amended by the Manila Amendments 2010.

Essential Information

Prerequisites

Delegates must hold a valid, in-date STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting certificate (A-VI/1-2). A valid offshore medical certificate or completed medical self-declaration form is required before commencing the course. Delegates must be physically capable of participating in all practical exercises.

Who is it for?

This course is required for all seafarers with designated safety or pollution-prevention duties who need to revalidate their Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting certification under the STCW Convention's five-year refresher requirement. Assessment

Delegates are assessed through a combination of practical observation and written or oral examination, in accordance with the methods and criteria set out in STCW Table A-VI/1-2.

Certification

Upon successful completion, delegates receive a refreshed STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting certificate (A-VI/1-2), valid for five years in accordance with the Manila Amendments 2010.

The fire triangle, fire classification (classes A to F), sources of ignition, and how fires spread on board a vessel

Shipboard firefighting organisation, including muster signals, location of firefighting appliances, emergency procedures, and escape routes

Fire prevention measures and actions to minimise the risk of fire on board, including identification of fire hazards associated with materials and equipment

Correct use of portable fire extinguishers and selection of the appropriate extinguishing agent for each class of fire

Use of hoses, nozzles, and breathing apparatus in firefighting operations, including correct donning and doffing procedures

Practical firefighting scenarios in realistic conditions, covering initial response, team coordination, and safe withdrawal procedures
