From job search to offshore wind: Will McLauchlan's Green Skills Bootcamp story

Breaking into the renewable energy sector can be challenging, but the right training and support make it achievable.

Before joining the Maersk Training Green Skills Bootcamp, Will McLauchlan was working in a different industry and had spent months applying unsuccessfully for renewable energy apprenticeships. Determined to pursue a career in offshore wind, he enrolled on the bootcamp to gain the practical skills and industry knowledge employers are looking for.

Throughout the programme, Will immersed himself in hands-on training, from Basic Technical Training particularly enjoying electrical testing and fault diagnosis to challenging nacelle rescue scenarios. He also valued learning alongside people from a variety of backgrounds, creating an environment where everyone could share knowledge, build confidence and support one another.

The guidance and expertise of Maersk Training's instructors gave Will the confidence to tackle unfamiliar tasks, develop new technical skills and gain a deeper understanding of the renewable energy industry.

Reflecting on the support he received, Will said:

"I felt incredibly supported throughout all courses from all of the trainers and staff. The trainers took their time to go through all of the information needed, nothing was rushed and it was all done in a way that ensured everyone was following along."

He also highlighted the value of learning alongside others with different levels of experience:

"The courses were taught in mixed groups, meaning you were working alongside people who were entirely new to renewables and engineers with years of experience who were a valuable resource of knowledge and contacts."

That hard work paid off.

Following the bootcamp, Will secured an apprenticeship with Siemens Gamesa as a Commissioning Technician, turning his ambition of working in renewables into reality.
