Learning Design Methodology

Learning Design Methodology

Good training doesn't start with a slide deck. It starts with the right learning objectives and a clear view of the behavior we need to change.

Training designed for the real working environment

Behind every Maersk Training course is a deliberate design process. We start with the operational outcome the client needs – safer lifts, faster well control response, better bridge team coordination – and work backwards to the learning objectives, assessment criteria and delivery format that will actually get us there. It is why our courses hold up to international accreditation and, more importantly, to the reality of the working environment they prepare people for.

Our methodology

Six stages, one goal: training that transfers from the classroom to the working environment. Here's how we get there.

Needs and performance analysis

We sit with operations, safety and HR stakeholders to understand the gap – the incidents, near misses, audit findings or strategic changes driving the training need.

Defining learning objectives

Objectives are written as observable behaviours, not topics. Each one links to a competency, a task and a measurable outcome.

Blueprint and assessment design

We decide the right mix of classroom, simulator, e-learning, VR/XR and on-the-job coaching – and how we will know the learning has transferred.

Content development

Subject matter experts and instructional designers co-author materials. Scenarios are built around real operational data where possible.

Pilot, validate and accredit

Courses are piloted with representative learners and, where relevant, submitted for accreditation (Nautical Institute, GWO, STCW, OPITO, IWCF / IADC).

Deliver, measure and improve

Participant, instructor and client feedback feeds a continuous improvement loop. We track whether learning actually shows up back in the workplace.

What it means for clients

Training that is targeted, defensible and linked to the outcomes you care about.

Consistency across centres, languages and delivery formats.

A shared framework our teams can use whether we're building a public course or a bespoke programme for your organisation.

Clear evidence of competence you can share with regulators, clients and auditors.
