Introduction
STCW A-VI/1-2 is a mandatory basic maritime training standard for fire prevention and fire fighting, covering core safety principles, equipment operation and practical emergency response.
Who is it for
Seafarers employed or engaged in any capacity on board as part of the ship's complement with designated safety or pollution-prevention duties.
Prerequisite
Maritime medical (blue book) or medical for fire fighters. To take the course without smoke diving, participants must present a DMA-approved medical certificate with an endorsement from the medical examiner stating that they cannot perform smoke diving.
Assessment
Theoretical assessment and practical demonstration of firefighting, breathing-apparatus use and rescue under realistic simulated conditions.
Certification
Upon successful completion, you will receive a STCW A-VI/1-2 Fire Fighting & Fire Prevention certificate accredited by the Danish Maritime Authority, valid for five years.
Course content
- Fire Prevention: Covers the fire triangle, ignition sources, flammable materials, fire spread, common shipboard hazards and the need for constant vigilance.
- Fire Organisation: Shipboard fire procedures, alarms, muster duties, communications, escape routes and actions when fire or smoke is detected.
- Fire Detection: Fire and smoke detection systems, automatic alarms, fire classifications and appropriate extinguishing agents.
- Firefighting Equipment: Portable extinguishers, fixed installations, hoses, nozzles, protective clothing and breathing apparatus.
- Firefighting Methods: Selection and safe use of water, foam, dry powder and other extinguishing agents for different types of fire.
- Practical Firefighting: Use of firefighting equipment, breathing apparatus, entry into smoke-filled spaces, casualty rescue and fire-extinguishing exercises.
