An innovative collaboration to change well control training

Maersk Training, specialist in advanced training for offshore, has successfully completed the pilot for the first ever virtual well control course, the IADC WellSharp® Live.  It broke new ground as to the new situation with all professionals attending the well control course were at home, in accordance with shelter-in-place regulations.  This achievement marks a step change in remote learning that is necessary to sustain our industry in these trying times.

The pilot class consisted of 10 members, from the USA, Canada, and even Australia. Their backgrounds varied from operators, service companies, to rig contractors. Instructional design experts were also logged into evaluate and contribute. The pilot course delivered was IADC WellSharp® Subsea Supervisor, which included workover operations.

No driving or airline travel was required for this course, which consequentially reduces the carbon footprint of participants performing this type of courses. In addition, in these worrying times, it enables families to stay together and help one another.

Maersk Training offers hundreds of well control classes every year worldwide. With the virtual IADC Wellsharp® Live course, we reduce time spent away from home without losing on the essential competencies necessary for safe and efficient operation our industry and on the same time decreasing administrative and travel costs.

The drive to get this approved as a valid way to get certified has been the special situation the World are going through in these days.

Q&A

Q.  What are some of the benefits of this course?

A. By doing the training from home, we reduce exposure and keep full compliance with the “Shelter in Place” orders dictated by city, state, and national officials. In addition, the delegates on the pilot enjoyed the convenience of learning from home, close to family during time off.

Q.  Is the course certified?

A. IADC was instrumental in guidance and setting up the course so it would comply with all regulatory requirements. Their Well Control experts were monitoring and participating to make sure the online course meet all criteria of a traditional face-to-face course.

Q.  How is the tests administered?

The written portion of the test is administered by the instructor plus an independent assessor. They perform a 360-degree scan of the room to ensure no external materials are used and the student takes the entire test while on webcam.

Q. How is the simulation portion of the test administered?

A. For the simulation portion, a one-on-one simulation is conducted with the instructor who monitors and evaluates the student based on a real-to-life simulation which tests the competency of well control procedures, equipment, and kill sheet calculations.

Q.  Wasn’t it distracting working from home?

A. Our families are why we work. Our families are why we are committed to helping each other stay safe.  During the pilot course, no problems were encountered regarding distractions normally associated with working from home.

How were you able to perform simulations?

Maersk Training has teamed up with Endeavor Technologies to use a innovative drilling and well control simulation software.  This software will offer new possibilities to the way we are doing standard training.

This software runs completely online, requires no downloads, and provides even more functionality than traditional simulators.  It also gives direct feedback to the student when answers are incorrect.

Standpipe manifolds, BOPs, Choke panels, and drill floors can be created to be identical to your drilling rig.  This increases comprehension as well as cutting down on the time it takes to familiarize your team with the SIM.
