The purpose of this course is to reinforce navigational officers knowledge, skills and competencies in how to handle tanker vessels safe and efficiently under various conditions. Thus ultimately reducing the risk of human error and of accidents at sea. The participants will gain knowledge of maneuvering theory which will be practiced in a full mission bridge simulator during ordinary as well as more complicated operations, and provide the individual an opportunity to test and optimize maneuvering strategies. The assistance of tugs will also be performed in the bridge simulator.
The theory is applied in exercises in the simulators in various weather conditions, in different scenarios and in relevant ports, including full feedback session after each completed operation. The course includes:
Basic maneuvering theory with focus on the handling characteristics of tankers
Calculation of forces by wind / current and their influence on the maneuvering
Case studies and accident analysis
Bank effect and vessel interaction
Effects of squat and shallow water influence
Turning and planning of turns
Planning of berthing/unberthing operations
Practical ship handling exercises
Use of tugs
In accordance with STCW A-II/2 and B-V/a
Upon completing the course, the participant will be able to:
Plan and execute maneuvers in different environmental and weather conditions
Handle the vessel during various operations, considering the limitations of the vessel
Have gained knowledge on maneuvering theory
