Press Release:  Maersk Training Announces Partnership with BP Houma Operations Learning Center (HOLC) to Deliver World-Class Training to Louisiana Workforce

Training aimed at U.S. Gulf of Mexico oilfield workers

Houston and New Orleans – Maersk Training Houston has entered into a new training partnership with bp Houma Operations Learning Center (HOLC) to develop the next generation of oilfield workers in the Gulf of Mexico.

Training will take place in person, online and using simulators, and will be delivered according to industry and regulatory standards. The bp Houma Operations Learning Center is known for its cutting-edge technology, such as an augmented reality “igloo” and an immersive crane simulator.

“HOLC represents an exciting new chapter for Maersk Training,” Matt Roberts, Interim Managing Director for Maersk Training Americas, said. “By partnering with one of the largest operators in the Gulf of Mexico, we aim to create an environment to innovate and challenge the workforce of tomorrow. Without innovation, there is stagnation, which leads to decline and mediocre safety culture. We look forward to delivering essential safety, crane and well control training to all operators, drilling contractors and service companies in the region.”

Maersk Training and bp have worked together extensively in the past on a broad range of projects including customized training courses, organizational change management and leadership development. This new partnership looks to expand on this relationship to further enhance the safety culture of both companies.

“bp is excited about this new chapter,” said Kalaan Vander Hamm, bp’s Learning Delivery Manager, Gulf of Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, Wind and HOLC. “HOLC opened in 2009 to increase local training and strengthen bp’s connection to the Houma region. bp remains committed to partnering with local communities and educational providers on safety training and looks forward to working with Maersk Training on future initiatives, including process training and front-line leadership.”

Maersk Training will offer industry-leading training on Crew Resource Management (CRM) skills, which focuses on how to effectively communicate information in high-risk industries. This is the same training that astronauts, pilots and surgical teams go through. This CRM training will complement basic safety courses, emergency management, crane training, process training and leadership development courses.

With technology playing a critical role in the development of employees, both companies recognize the considerable advantages of teaming up to develop new content and training programs.

Tyler Hamm, Maersk Training’s Head of Commercial for the Americas added: “This new Maersk Training – bp HOLC partnership enables us to broaden our safety and operational best practices reach to a wider scope of specialized workers in the oil and gas industry so they consistently achieve their safety and operational goals in demanding settings.”

ResQ has five survival centres located strategically in Norway to cater for training in the North Sea and offers more than 70 course titles, while the crisis management part consists of a full emergency response setup, which can be fully customised to the customer’s needs and handle all aspects of an emergency. ResQ has 67 permanent employees and over 300 temporary resources spread across the country.

“ResQ is a well-managed and profitable business with renowned competencies within training services. As part of Maersk Trainings ambitions to become a leading training provider with end-to-end services across the North-Sea region, we regard ResQ as a perfect fit, as it will significantly increase our presence in Norway and increase our end-to-end offerings,” says David Skov, CEO Maersk Training.

Maersk Training and ResQ has a close relationship today with ResQ being the largest third-party service provider for Maersk Training in Norway. Since 2019, ResQ has been a subcontractor of Maersk Training delivering services to support the Maersk Training’s global training management contract.

“We are looking very much forward to be part of Maersk Training and believe combining our business will significantly strengthen our value proposition to customers. Together we can provide a full end-to-end offering and further evolve our crisis management services to digital platforms which will allow us to expand to other industries as well as to international customers,” says Njål Arne Vathne, CEO of ResQ.

Norway is a key hub for training services due to exposure to oil and gas and maritime segments in the North Sea and consequently Norway is a core market for many of Maersk Trainings´ global customers. Today, the majority of the customer base comes from the oil and gas industry and the general maritime industry, but Maersk Training is looking into other attractive sectors, including offshore renewable energy and financial services.

“There is a growing potential serving the offshore renewable energy industry in the North Sea which is constantly evolving, not least with the recent North Sea Summit in Esbjerg where it was agreed to target 65 Gigawatt installed before 2030 and 150 Gigawatt installed by 2050. Also, new advancements in technology will allow for larger wind farms to be built further offshore that use bigger and more powerful turbines than current models.” says David Skov.

Within offshore renewable energy industry, the introduction of more and more new energy technologies such as floating wind, hybrid platforms, tidal energy lagoons and energy storage offer a wide range of future potentials. These advancements are pushing to reach set energy targets in order to tackle the issues of energy demand and security, reducing CO2 emissions and climate change, and will require new procedures for customers on safety training, emergency preparedness and operational performance planning. The acquisition of ResQ provides a platform which allows Maersk Training to service the offshore renewables industry in Norway.

The enterprise value of the transaction on a post IFRS 16 basis is approximately USD 26m (pre-IFS16 enterprise value of c. USD 14m) reflecting a pre-synergy EBITDA multiple of 5.3x based on adjusted 2021 EBITDA. Completion of the acquisition is subject to regulatory review and approval.

Dubai: Maersk Training on Sunday, 5th December 2021, formed a collaboration with Saudi Electric Services Polytechnic to create a technical training program that will aid Saudi Arabia’s future workforce in the renewable energy sector. The agreement to create the Kingdom’s first-of-its-kind workforce development program was signed between Vijay Rangachari, Regional Managing Director, Eastern Hemisphere, Maersk Training and Dr. Khalid Al Somaili Managing Director, Saudi Electric Services Polytechnic in the presence of dignitaries at the Danish Pavilion at Expo 2020 in Dubai.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has launched a strategic initiative called ‘The National Renewable Energy Program’ (NREP) as a part of Vision 2030 which aims to increase the Kingdom’s share of renewable energy production, achieve a balance in the mix of local energy sources, and fulfil the Kingdom’s obligations towards reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Through the programme, the Ministry of Energy in Saudi Arabia is working to diversify the national energy mix used in electricity production, increasing the share of natural gas and renewable energy sources to approximately 50% by 2030 while reducing the use of liquid fuel.

The expansion of renewable energy in the Kingdom presents the need to upskill the workforce of the future. Maersk Training, with its extensive expertise in training organisations, crew and individuals in the Oil & Gas, Maritime and Wind industry and building competencies, therefore entered into a collaboration with Saudi Electric Services Polytechnic (SESP) to achieve the required workforce capability development for renewable energy sector in the Kingdom.

Dr. Khalid Al Somaili stated, “SESP is pleased to sign this agreement which presents an opportunity for Maersk Training and SESP to jointly support the Renewable Energy industry in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia along with supporting the workforce capability development in line with the Kingdom vision 2030.”

“At Maersk Training, our focus has been on enhancing safety and driving performance through capability and competency building. We are delighted to collaborate with SESP and play a role in developing the building blocks of Saudi Arabia’s diversified energy mix of tomorrow”, said Vijay Rangachari.

Further David Skov, CEO of Maersk Training said , “A.P. Moller – Maersk lays great importance in decarbonisation as a part of its sustainability strategy and we are happy to contribute in developing a workforce that will enable reduction of emissions from other sectors too.”

The collaboration between Maersk Training and Saudi Electric Services Polytechnic will lead to the creation of multiple long term training modules as per industry needs (ranging from 6 months to potentially 18 months) and will run over at least the next six years. The programme expects to train a workforce of more than 3,000 trainees in the coming years to upskill them to enter into the wind renewable industry.
