The audit, carried out by two senior Maersk Training specialists, looked at every learning aspect of the Nanjing-based institute. From its General Management System and instructional material, to the simulation set-up and the individual instructors CV’s and delivery performance. The MT Branded Training Facility will now provide the Train-the-Trainer programmes along with established courses like bridge room and engine room resource management.
Jiangsu Maritime Institute has a long history in specializing in ocean shipping and inland water transportation. Over 130,000 technical students have passed through its doors since it opened in 1951. With course on ship manufacture, port engineering, logistics and trade, it has a broader brief than the Maersk entity and they were keen to adopt the learning methodology of younger European company which has just marked its 40th anniversary.
In addressing the opening ceremony Christian Solmunde Michelsen, Head of Sales and Marketing for Maersk Training in Svendborg said, ‘We have based our operation on international recognized standards and accreditations. There are many opportunities for new projects in our cooperation. JMI have a clear vision of what they want to achieve and we are very impressed with Vice President Tian’s approach to continues learning and a global mindset.’
Although situated 300 kilometres from the open sea, Nanjing has a long nautical history, largely because the Yangtze is one of the world’s most navigable rivers.
